Using methods from statistical mechanics, we study the phase transition between these two qualitatively different scenarios. Much of condensed matter and statistical physics is concerned with the explanation of phase transitions between different forms of matter. Statistical physics has been applied in the last decades to several problems in mechanics, including fracture and plasticity. We will discuss the different possible phases of the system and the essential features of its dynamics (activated diffusion in one chart and transitions between charts).
